Before Coming to Pick Up Your Custom Orthotics
Generally, the patient will return in three weeks to pick up their custom orthotics at one of our locations in Mississauga or Orangeville. They must bring shoes to this appointment so the orthotics can be properly fitted and the pedorthist can assess how the orthotic is controlling the patient’s gait pattern. This appointment normally takes about 30 minutes. Footwear choices will be discussed if they have not already been addressed.
Follow-up appointments will be determined on a case-by-case basis. All follow-ups are free of charge for a period of one year. The Foot Company has onsite labs at each of its locations to allow for adjustments to be made while you wait. This dramatically improves recovery times as well as the quality of the adjustments.
FAQ’s

What is a Canadian Certified Pedorthist?
Canadian Certified Pedorthists are orthotic and footwear experts. Specialized education and training give Pedorthists the expertise to assess the lower limb anatomy and biomechanics, as well as cast, manufacture, adjust, and dispense foot orthotics and shoes. This is a skill set unique to the C Ped (C) designation.
What is a foot orthotic?
A foot orthotic is an orthopedic appliance that fits inside of a shoe. It’s used to support, align, prevent, or correct deformities and to improve function of movable parts of the body. Foot orthotics are used to alleviate pain that is due to improper foot function.
Foot orthotics range from generic, over-the-counter, arch supports, to fully custom made devices. The materials used also vary from very soft foams to firm, heat moldable plastics. The Foot Company will determine the most appropriate kind of orthotic for you based on your condition and footwear requirements.
How is a custom foot orthotic made?
- A three-dimensional cast of the foot is taken.
- Plaster is poured into this cast to create a positive mold of the patient’s foot.
- Materials are then heated and vacuum pressed to this mold and further layers of material to achieve the desired correction.
Orthotics can be crafted to fit in a wide range of shoes including (high heels, runners, walking shoes, safety boots, skates, ski boots, dance shoes, hiking boots, and almost any other type of footwear you may own.)
The orthotics should be able to move from one shoe to another as long as the shoes are not dramatically different in fit.
The Foot Company will discuss the appropriate shoe to be wearing to treat the problem and will determine the most effective way to make the orthotic versatile.
Are The Foot Company’s services covered by OHIP or other provincial insurance?
Pedorthic services are not covered under OHIP. If you have insurance benefits at work you must look into your policy to determine what you are eligible to have covered. Most plans cover pedorthic services but require a written referral from a physician in order for your claim to be processed.
Are Your Services Covered By Third Party Insurance?
The Foot Company’s services are recognized by all major insurance companies including WSIB, DVA, Blue Cross, MVA, Canadian military, RCMP, and Ontario works & disability.
Do You Do Direct Billing?
Only for a select few insurance companies. Most insurance companies want the billing to come from the policy holder instead of the clinic.
